- Route description Kustavi (Vuosnainen - Kustavi town centre, 8km)
From Osnäs Harbour it is approximately 8 km to the yard area of Kustavi’s old municipal hall, which is the main starting point of the route. From Osnäs the route mainly runs through forested landscapes across the island of Vartsala. Views over the water towards Hilappajärvi and the sea can especially be enjoyed in the harbour areas.
After the ferry journey, it may be pleasant to stop for a while at the services at Osnäs Harbour or stretch your legs along the scenic Osnäs Nature Trail, which runs across the rocky shoreline. Near Osnäs Harbour you can also visit the Kalliolla Environmental Art event, an outdoor exhibition located on the cliffs at Spauna. The exhibition is free of charge and open daily during the period 7 June – 31 August 2025.
On the way to Kustavi, the route also includes another short ferry crossing with the Vartsala ferry, which transports you from the island back to the mainland. On the way from the ferry to the centre of Kustavi you will also pass the beautiful Kustavi Church, which was inaugurated at its present location in 1783. The section between Vartsala ferry terminal and Kustavi centre runs through the built-up area, where the route’s only cycle path is located, allowing for safe and smooth cycling.
The distance from Vuosnainen to Kustavi centre is 8 km.
Water refill
At Vuosnainen Harbour there is a waiting shelter with a toilet and drinking water available from a tap.
Route alternative: Via Southern Vartsala
The route also includes an alternative section via Southern Vartsala along Vartsalantie. This route winds through traditional agricultural landscapes and idyllic villages, and also gives you the opportunity to visit the Kustavi Archipelago Museum and The Old School in Vartsala.
Tips for places slightly off the route:
Jeremias Caves are an impressive natural rock formation consisting of steep rock walls as well as deep, unmarked cracks and fissures. As the name suggests, the formation contains several caves of different sizes. The caves are located within a nature protection area.
