Route description Houtskär (11km)

– From Mossala Harbour to Roslax Harbour

On this route you will experience the maritime archipelago nature at its best, with two ferry crossings as highlights: the route passes via the Mossala and Kivimo ferries, offering beautiful views of the archipelago from the sea.

The landscape along the way varies from open fields to atmospheric archipelago villages and forest sections. Along the route you pass through the villages of Mossala, Björkö and Kivimo, where you can experience the authentic archipelago atmosphere. A distinctive feature of this road is the hazel bushes growing along the roadside, giving the landscape a special character. In spring, the orchid Adam and Eve (Orchis mascula), the parish flower of Houtskär, blooms here.

In addition to the harbours, you can enjoy views of the water at several points along the route — especially in the Lömsö area, where the views over Källarfjärden stretch out over a longer distance. In some places, however, the views are partly limited by reed beds and shoreline vegetation.

Water refill

There are opportunities to refill water bottles in Näsby, the church village of Houtskär, and in Hyppeis in connection with local services. In the more nature-oriented sections of the route there are no water points, so it is recommended to bring enough drinking water, especially on warm days.

Tips for places slightly off the route:

In the village you can experience peaceful village life and the proximity of the sea, as well as visit the Björkö Shop Museum and Grandmother’s Traditional Cottage (Mormors Allemogestuga).

Houtskärs centre village Näsby

Näsby offers services and archipelago history. The Houtskär wooden church, built in 1703–1704, is a must-see, together with the Archipelago Museum.

A charming village with local culture and places to eat.

A harbour with further connections out into the archipelago.

On the way to Hyppeis, in Jervis, you will find Borgberget, which offers outstanding views. In 1993, a lookout tower was built on the hill, and in clear weather you can see all the way to Åland.
